The fortress of Garni is situated in the village of the same name in the Kotayk District. That was a mighty fortress well known from chronicles (Cornelius Tacitus, Movses Khorenatsi, etc.). The structures of Garni combine elements of Hellenistic and national culture, which is evidence of antique influences and the distinctive building traditions of the Armenian people. The artistic merits and uniqueness of its monuments place Garni among outstanding creations of architecture of world importance. The temple was built in the second half of the first century B.C. and dedicated to a heathen god, probably to Mitra, the god of the sun, whose figure stood in the depth of the sanctuary. After Christianity had been proclaimed the state religion in Armenia in 301, the temple was probably used as a summer residence of the kings. A chronicle describes it as ‘‘a house of coolness‘‘.
Garni Canyon lies across the length of the Azat (Garni) river and its confluent Gogh. The canyon is attractive for the wonderful natural rocks, formed of regular hexagonal cylinders. These rocks start from the beginning up to the highest point of the canyon. The composition is called “Symphony of Stones” or “Basalt Organ”. “Symphony of Stones” is registered in the list of natural monuments. (this tour cannot be arranged by big bus)
We‘ll continue to Geghard monastery. Geghardavank (also known as ‘Ayrivank; – the cave monastery) is situated in a picturesque canyon, 28 km south-east of Yerevan. The main church of Katoghike is a domed hall construction built-in 1215. The narthex was attached from the west in 1225-1230. The other parts of the monastery were created under the rule of father and son Proshians/Khaghbakyans and were carved out of solid rock. The first church was carved out by architect Galdzak in 1282. The second church of St. Godmother and the adjacent narthex date back to 1283. On the second level, there is another rock-carved building – the mausoleum of Papak and his wife Rousukan (1288).
